Do not be misled by the claims that LinkedIn and VisualCV are providing you with a unique URL. Yes, it is a unique URL—but it is not the same as having your own domain name. You only get a subdomain of the main domain. It is still the main site’s domain name/your name. For instance, the default URL setting on LinkedIn is www.linkedin.com/in/YourName, and the same is true for VisualCV.

For instance, if you are a manufacturing engineer in Boston, for SEO purposes, it is preferred to own your own Website with your own keyword-rich domain, such as www.manaufacturingengineerboston.com. A recognized best practice for SEO purposes is to have a keyword-rich domain name.
